An Erotica photo shoot? But I’m a man!
Ready to go beyond boudoir?
Erotica, by BSNY, is the next level past boudoir. It allows you to explore sexuality and intimacy beyond traditional boudoir. In a boudoir session, you are owning the power of your beauty, whereas in an erotica session, you own the power of your pleasure as our photographers capture you and your partner(s) in real, sexually intimate moments.
Our very first couple to do an erotica shoot with us several months ago, not only took the brave step to do the shoot, but also took the time to write about their experience almost immediately after. Our very own Teresa (who manages our Facebook group, The Boudoir Lounge) and her partner, Jim, gave us some incredible feedback and insight into the power of doing an erotica shoot! This post is part one, Jim’s perspective. Here’s what he had to say:
Boudoir photos? An erotica photo shoot? But, I’m a man!
Stop me if you’ve heard this one, guys: Your lady says, “I’d really like to do something together, and I know it’s a bit out of your comfort zone…” Here we go, right?
Well, this very thing happened to me recently. My girlfriend had recently had a boudoir photo session with Boudoir Studios New Yrok, and she absolutely loved it. She had some prints framed and hung some around the house. I didn’t know it was possible for a photo to be both tasteful and sexy, but I do now. *(Check out our blog post on where to put your boudoir wall art!)
A couple of months after her boudoir shoot, she wanted to make it a couple’s affair, and she had booked us for an erotica photo session. Because I’m a guy, and prefer to sail on smooth seas, of course I enthusiastically agreed to the shoot. As she skipped off blissfully to start planning our photo session I looked online to figure out what an erotica photo shoot was, what I would need, and what would be expected of me. I will let you know what I found out in my research, as well as throughout the photo shoot.
Most of the available information about boudoir and erotica shoots are aimed at women, and for good reason: If the woman is interested in getting sexy photos taken, her man can either go with her, or hope that the stand-in doesn’t take his place permanently. So, now that I had fully committed myself to this session, I got right to work. First up- What is an erotica photo shoot, and how does it differ from a boudoir shoot? Here’s a primer:
Boudoir photos- Sexy photos taken in various states of dress that use lighting, setting, and angles to highlight the beauty and shape of a person. Usually, a boudoir subject is female, and her beauty provides the art of the photo.
Erotica photos- Erotica photos typically focus on more than one person, usually a couple, enjoying each other in an erotic and sensual way.

This is about as far as I made it in my research before I started to get cold feet. I’m a man! You mean some guy will be there with a camera taking pictures of my partner and I while we enjoy each other’s company?! Also, I don’t even sit on the bench at the gym after a shower, let alone walk the locker room in the nude, will I be able to do this? Of course, my other thought was, “This is going to be hot!”
Fast forward three weeks to today. We had our erotica shoot this past weekend, and it was, in a word, exhilarating. Whatever fears, hesitations, or discomfort that I had, quickly melted away once I got to the studio. There were 2 photographers, one male, one female, and their professionalism helped immensely. It was very clear that they were there to document our love and affection, and I never felt that I was acting or posing for them.
I quickly understood the unique opportunity that this presented. Guys, you know what I’m talking about here. You see the pictures that your girlfriend, wife, co-worker, etc takes and gets taken of herself, but no one will see her from the angles that you do. I tried to think of those activities, poses, and postures that really highlight those parts of her body that drive me crazy, and I made sure to incorporate some of those. Also, there are not a lot of times that you can get away with asking your partner to put her butt in the air and her face on the pillow, but this is one!
The whole photo session flew by. If it was weird at the start (and it may be for some), I didn’t have time to think about that for long, as we changed outfits, used different scenery and props, and enjoyed each other's touch. The photographers utilized different lighting techniques and suggested subtle adjustments that would help to make the photos magnificent. They never suggested specific acts or activities, only ways to make what we were doing photograph better. *(To learn about what an erotica experience with BSNY is like, click here!)
So, for those men who may be nervous about their partner suggesting a couples photo shoot, I have a piece of advice- You suggest it first! Many professional photographers and studios near you offer some combination of boudoir and/or erotica photo packages, so see what’s out there. Book an intro call or consultation, or check out the portfolio that any reputable photographer will have displayed. You can bring all of your modesty, dignity, and insecurities with you, and you can leave the studio with them too if you’d like, but they won’t be seen in the photos. I was able to see some of the photos during the session, and they were incredible! I can’t wait to see the finished product, and maybe I will even share some photos.
If you are looking for a way to spice things up, or just to document and celebrate your love, I’d highly recommend an erotica shoot with Boudoir Studios New York, and that is before I have even seen the finished photos. She’ll thank you, and you can thank me.
